Jaw Function Assessment
We review symptoms, jaw movement, joint sounds, muscle tenderness, bite contacts, tooth wear, posture, and airway-related signs.
SERVICE
Non-surgical care for jaw pain, clicking, muscle tension, headaches, and bite-related strain.
Book ConsultationWhat Is It
TMJ treatment focuses on the temporomandibular joints, the muscles that move the jaw, and the way the bite, posture, breathing, and stress patterns influence jaw function. When this system is overloaded, people may notice pain, clicking, locking, headaches, facial tension, or difficulty chewing comfortably.
At Airway Clinic Stockholm, we assess the jaw joints and surrounding muscles together with dental wear, bite balance, oral habits, airway signs, and daily triggers. The aim is to understand why symptoms are happening, not only to quiet them temporarily.
Treatment is typically non-surgical and may include splint therapy, jaw exercises, muscle relaxation strategies, bite adjustments when appropriate, and practical guidance for clenching, grinding, sleep, and stress-related tension.
Who Is It For
Adults and teens with jaw pain, clicking or popping joints, locked jaw, difficulty opening, chewing discomfort, facial muscle tension, morning headaches, tooth wear, clenching, grinding, neck tension, or a bite that feels unstable. It is also relevant when jaw symptoms appear alongside poor sleep, mouth breathing, or ongoing stress.
How It Works
Every plan is tailored to the patient’s symptoms, joint health, bite, and muscle function.
We review symptoms, jaw movement, joint sounds, muscle tenderness, bite contacts, tooth wear, posture, and airway-related signs.
We identify whether symptoms are mainly joint-related, muscle-related, bite-related, habit-related, or a combination.
Your plan may include a custom splint, exercises, habit coaching, muscle relaxation, and guidance for clenching or grinding.
Follow-up visits track pain, movement, appliance fit, bite comfort, and progress toward more stable daily function.

FAQ
TMJ symptoms can come from joint irritation, muscle overload, clenching, grinding, bite imbalance, trauma, posture, stress, sleep issues, or several factors working together.
Most patients start with conservative care such as splint therapy, exercises, habit changes, and muscle relaxation strategies. Surgery is not the usual first step.
A custom splint can protect teeth, reduce muscle overload, and help stabilise the jaw position during sleep or high-risk clenching periods.
Not always. Clicking that is painless and stable may only need monitoring, but clicking with pain, locking, limited opening, or bite changes should be assessed.
Timing depends on the cause and severity. Many patients notice early improvement within weeks, while stabilising long-standing patterns can take longer.
It can help when headaches are linked to jaw muscle tension, clenching, grinding, or bite strain. We refer for medical assessment when symptoms suggest another cause.
